Arun Jaitley (December 28, 1952 – August 24, 2019) was an eminent Indian politician and lawyer who played a key role in shaping India's economic and legal landscape. A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he served in various positions, including Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs from 2014 to 2019.Born in New Delhi to Maharaj Kishan Jaitley, a lawyer, and Ratan Prabha Jaitley, Arun belonged to a Punjabi Brahmin family that migrated from Lahore during the Partition of India. He completed his schooling from St. Xavier's Senior Secondary School in Delhi and graduated with honours in commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi in 1973. During his student years, Jaitley was actively involved in political movements. He served as the president of the Delhi University Students Union in 1974 and was a prominent leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Due to his activism he was put in preventive detention for 19 months during the Emergency period (1975–77). Jaitley began his legal career in 1977 and was designated as a senior advocate by the Supreme Court of India in 1989. He represented a number of high-profile clients, including the Coca-Cola Company and leading film directors, establishing a successful legal practice. Following the BJP's victory in the 2014 general elections, Jaitley was appointed as Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet.
